Altered Surfaces

Altered Surfaces: Using Acrylic Paints with Gels, Mediums, Grounds & Pastes by Chris Cozen, Working Artist, Golden Artist Colors

If you have ever wondered about all those types of acrylic paints, mediums, glazes, and other interesting sounding Art Substances from Golden, this is the book to explain it all to you! Every page is filled with colorful pictures and packed with information. Written by a Golden Working Artist who explains each product clearly and shows how to use them alone and together for spectacular results. 48 pages.

From the Preface:

If you like color like I do, then you will discover paints that are richly and generously packed with artist pigments, which will provide you with smooth, luscious and incredible results! Once you start using these artist grade paints you may never go back to "craft" or "student" grade paints which have far less pigment.

You'll discover that acrylic paints, fluids, gels, mediums, grounds, and pastes work as a "system", allowing them to be fully compatible with each other. You can mix and match to your hearts content without worry!

Simply Soldered

Simply Soldered

Simply Soldered: Jewelry, Frames, Boxes, Accents & More! by Cary Edelmann Avery with Beckah Krahula, Opie and Linda O'Brien, Ramona Dolan Ashman, Tom Ashman, Laura Dehart, and Linda Raul.

A Design Originals book about making jewelry and other fun things using solder. This technique is sometimes known as Faux Soldering or Glass Soldering, and can be used with clear or frosted Memory Glass Slides and Memory Foil Tape. It has nice instructions for beginners complete with pictures of the tools and supplies required. Now you can make charms of virtually anything - Scrabble tiles, game pieces, pottery shards, coins.

We used to think of soldering as something you do to attach wires to a board, but now we understand what is happening with soldering glass! You are not really soldering things together so much as covering strips of copper foil with solder, which is a nice shiny silvery color because it's mostly tin. Along the way you can solder on a jump ring, of course, to make a charm or pendant, so there is some attaching going on. More importantly, you are creating a nice frame around an object to make it into jewelry.

Art of Decoupage

The Art of Decoupage

Special Purchase "The Art of Decoupage" by Roberta Harman. 24 pages (including covers and 4 single-sided pages with images to use for decoupage.) 8.5" x 11". $1.50

A blast from the past! This booklet on how to do decoupage was published in 1966 and the hairdo on the author's photo proves it!

We call it Altered Art now-a-days, but cutting out paper images and gluing them to a non-paper surface has traditionally been known as decoupage. It is an art form that has been around since the 17th Century, probably originating in Venice and then spreading throughout Europe.

Ms. Harman gives a lot of good, basic information that you don't see people mentioning a lot these days. Tips on cutting, for instance. A great method for lining a box with velvet. She even decoupages on mirrors! Here's a piece of trivia for you: one who decoupages is a decoupeur!

Bound into the center are 4 sheets with wonderful black and white images for you to cut out or copy and use for decoupage. Flowers, carousel horses, an old-fashioned sailing ship, a pocket watch, an imposing coat-of-arms with lions rampant, a mild maid and one of her charges, birds, butterflies, cathedral ruins, and more. Most of them look very antique. These images are worth the price all by themselves!

Along the sides of the pages are interesting pictures of very elegant antiques that were decoupaged long ago.

The index lists the following sections:

  • Introduction
  • Tools, Supplies and Their Uses
  • Coloring Prints
  • Cutting Out Prints
  • Antiquing
  • Gold Leafing
  • The Use of Gesso
  • Lining a Box
  • Prints
  • Decoupage on Wooden Surfaces
  • Decoupage on Metal Surfaces
  • Decoupage on Glass Surfaces
  • Decoupage on a Mirror
  • Distressed Decoupage
  • Decoupage With Plastic
